There are special problems in matching multiple births since they are:
- Over-represented in infant deaths (2% of births, but 12% of deaths).
- Often crisis-oriented deliveries sometimes resulting in incomplete paper work.
- Middle and first names are often missing but other variables are identical, so it is not possible to discriminate between the first and second born and select the correct pair.
- This increases the chance of a false match.
